Path of Exile Item Upgrades

The performance of a variety of Path of Exile items can be improved by upgrading them. They can also provide additional damage, AD or even affixes.

Often times however, upgraded Common and Magic gear is outclassed by Rare-grade gear due to their requirements.

Armor

Armor upgrades can be applied to both weapon and armor items. They improve the stats of the item that they are connected to. Armor upgrades can be found in the world of the game and are available from Blacksmiths on bonfires. They can also be salvaged by using a specialist or higher salvage kits to salvage upgrade components from items.

The amount of damage an armored piece or weapon can absorb depends on the extent of its upgrades. A piece of armor upgraded to maximum upgrade level will increase its ability to absorb damage. It is important to keep in mind that this will increase the weight of the armor, so it must be heavier.

There are a variety of armor upgrades available in the game. Each has a different effect. Some upgrades give armor a greater amount of health points while others make it stronger and lighter. The name of the upgrade will indicate the kind of upgrade the item can be given, as illustrated below.

A good guideline for trinket upgrades is to prioritize BiS (Best item upgrader-in-Slot) items that you won't be replacing soon, followed by any items with desirable stats but less important than the iLevel of the Item Upgrader Kit to be upgraded.
