WoW Upgrades - The Item Upgrader

Upgrades can give you boosts in specific stats. Each upgrade increases the level of the item by +3. A random additional substat is also boosted alongside each upgrade.

Upgraded gear generally sees greater value for trade, unless it has inherently low requirements (like the FB shield of the sorc) or very high stat variation (like the eth titan weapons). The latter are less valuable from upgrading due to the need to roll for a perfect version.

Recycle Points

The upgrader for items allows players to upgrade their gear to a higher item level by supplying the appropriate currency to the NPC. Upgrades can be applied to any type of weapon or armor. The item used to upgrade the item is discarded and cannot be used again. Upgrades can also be used to create enchantments.

The upgrader can be found in all major cities and is accessible anytime to upgrade your gear. To keep your gear up-to-date it is recommended you visit the upgrader each few weeks.

The cost of upgrading will be based on the current item level of the equipment being upgraded but they will always be cheaper than purchasing new gear from other sources. For instance upgrading a chest piece from Benthic to 385 levels will cost 20 recycle points while purchasing the same item from another player will costs 105.

Valorstones

Upgrades are items which can be used to level up weapons and tools, armor and accessories. They can be purchased through NPCs who sell upgrades to item level upgrade owners in a variety of currencies. They can also find them on random treasure lists. Once purchased, an upgrade is able to be used on any weapon, tool or armor. The button will show a preview of an item's next level of upgrade, when there are enough materials.

The cost of upgrading is based on the item slot and current item level and the weapon's price is higher than gloves or bracers, for instance. Each step costs 15 Flightstones and a number of crests, with some upgrades having a discount to reduce the cost of the Flightstones or crests used. Once an item has been upgraded to a certain amount it can be re-downgraded and sold to the upgrader for a lower price.

A lot of locations offer upgraders for items which include the main island and some outposts. The NPCs offer both an upgrade discount as well as a chance to acquire a new upgrade recipe. The discount for upgrading increases when more items are upgraded. It can be increased by having players complete certain achievements or complete quests.

Icewind Dale does not have an item upgrader at the start, unlike Cromwell from Baldur's Gate II. The NPCs that can assist with upgrades are only available through a variety of methods. This is both a positive and a drawback.

In Season 3 the upgrade system was modified a bit, and numerous new features added. After a player has earned an upgrade to a specific item level for a particular armor slot, upgrading other items to that same item upgrader mod level will cost less even in the event that they belong to an entirely different set of gear.

The amount of Valorstones needed for upgrades is decreased, and the discount is affixed to all accounts. The amount of Harbinger Crests needed to upgrade is reduced as well, but is only available after certain milestones are achieved.

Crests

Players have a number of options when it comes to upgrading their gear in WoW. Flightstones are an Item Level Upgrade that is available to everyone for upgrading. Crests are more specific and are utilized during specific item level upgrade level upgrades. Crests are the main component of the Dragonflight gear progression system introduced in 10.1, and come in 4 ranks.

The first thing to remember is that the crests can only be purchased for equipment of a certain rank. Each rank comes with distinct upgrade paths. The easiest and most straightforward upgrade is 15 crests. The most complicated upgrade could require as much as 20 crests, contingent on the kind of gear being upgraded.

Players can obtain crests by working through content that is of the appropriate level, which involves walking around and engaging in outdoor activities for gear of lower tiers, raids or dungeons with all difficulty for items of higher tier, or Mythic+ heroic raid bosses and dungeons to obtain endgame gear. These crests are then exchanged with an item upgrader, such as Cuzolth or Vaskarn in Valdrakken for the appropriate upgrade steps and routes.

The new currency system isn't difficult to use, but it brings some modifications to the upgrade process. When a piece attains the highest level of upgrade for any rank (Explorer or Adventurer) it no longer requires Flightstones. This change lets players upgrade their gear to the highest possible ilvl on all their characters rather than relying on seasonal loot.

Another significant modification is that crests have one usage and it's crucial to use them properly. For instance, it's a good idea to make use of all your Whelpling-rank crests on the top equipment you have and save Drake and Wyrm crests for the next batch of upgrades you plan on making. This is particularly relevant for items like trinkets and rings that take up several slots. The account-wide discount will only apply when all slots on the character are filled with high-quality gear.
